Congrats to Counselor Starting Prestigious Doctorate Program

We’re so proud of Heidi McCarthy, M.Ed., QMHP, CMHT, Counselor / BHG Knoxville-Bernard Treatment Center, for being invited to pursue her doctoral research studies in the Quadrivium at the University of Cambridge as a Visiting Fellow.

“Yes, this rebel piano teacher/addictions counselor who is obsessed with Bach and Radiohead will be supported by an incredible team of physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers at the largest think tank in the world,” said Heidi.

At her last year of graduate school at Vanderbilt University, Heidi designed a musical intervention program called “Music, Art and Mindfulness,” for SUD patients. Las March, she began offering free sessions to BHG patients whom she witnessed embracing the music as part of their recovery.

Research has proven that studying, listening to, and performing music (particularly on piano) can repair and generate new neurons damaged by SUDs and any other co-occurring medical conditions.

“I am hopeful my passion for music and the arts will spread to as many patients as I can possibly reach.”

Between what you’ve started and what you’ll learn from the Quadrivium, patients, staff and our communities are sure to be inspired to think creatively and connect differently in their healing and well-being.
