Maryland Team Removes Blight, Makes Way for Murals

When Kathy Bishop, Program Director for Phoenix Health Center, her husband and Treatment Center team heard that beautiful art murals were being installed on nearby buildings as part of the Better Together project with San Mar Family and Community Services, they took matters into their own hands and not only cleaned gang graffiti off the neighboring Meritus Health garage, but they also primed and painted the walls to match and gave the remaining paint to them for future use.

“This is just one very small example of the ripple effect of our neighborhood efforts. One good deed deserves another,” said Keith Fanjoy, LCSW-C and CEO of San Mar.

Kathy said she didn’t want the beauty or the message of the mural to be dimmed by the graffiti. “We are all part of this community. We are good neighbors. We are responsible and hold our patients accountable. We are now part of the Behavioral Health Group Family. We have a new medical director, and we just completed our Joint Commission Survey. There were lots of positive comments about the graffiti clean-up and the murals being yelled from passing cars, and from people walking through. To my surprise two to three men stopped and offered to help. It feels good to do good. Thank you for the opportunity and for helping us to be part of the Better Together project.”

Even the Executive Director of Facilities for Meritus Health got in on the gratitude. “Thank you so much Kathy and Keith. The mural looks beautiful and thank you Kathy for covering up the graffiti. Meritus is happy to be able to contribute to the great work you are all doing for the community.”

Alabama Treatment Center Grows Community Garden

Submitted by Jaime M. Matthews, LPC, Program Director, BHG Mobile and Grand Bay

Over the last two years, our Grand Bay team has intentionally focused on shifting patient culture as they were used to only dosing and leaving before BHG acquired our center. Our amazing team has worked hard to get patients on board with counseling which has now led to some of them staying at the office often to encourage and visit with other patients. When we decided to do more to engage them while there and plant a community garden, they jumped on board and have been helping ever since. We have two garden beds growing so far with plans to build two to three more in the coming weeks. The first harvest produced lettuce, okra, kale, sage, and collard greens.

All materials are donated, and the patients and staff have done all of the work to get the project going. Counselor Lisa Brown heads up the project with the assistance of here team members. We are also planning a ceremony soon to dedicate the garden to all of those lost to addiction.

Spirit Week at BHG

Every year during National Recovery Month, teams across the country plan a Recovery Spirit Week. Picking a themed costume each day, both staff and patients enjoy the light-hearted celebrations.
